Stanwell Corporation Case Study
The challenge
Stanwell Corporation is a renowned energy provider supplying large commercial and industrial customers in Queensland, New South Wales, the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria. In a year, Stanwell generates over 4,000 megawatts of energy through its gas, coal and hydro power stations. The corporation’s People and Culture teams are constantly recruiting top talent – while staying aligned to its brand promise of producing energy that’s reliable, affordable and sustainable.
Stanwell’s previous systems were challenging. “We were basically working off spreadsheets and a filing system, so there were a lot of inefficiencies with no single source of data. Our systems were very costly and non-integrated and they didn’t cater for cross-team collaboration or allow one experience for candidates and our in-house teams,” said Peter Johnston, Manager – People and Culture Services. “We were looking for a talent management system that could consolidate all of our capabilities to allow our People and Culture teams to work as one. We also wanted to increase employee engagement through a unified talent management strategy,” he said.

The focus
Johnston and his team identified that they needed a consolidated human capital management strategy – one that included a robust talent management framework. Empowering hiring managers, recruiters and leadership teams with one system for job advertisements and candidate relationship management right through to onboarding, learning and succession was a key focus.
The solution
After reviewing other talent management solutions in the market, the Stanwell team selected PageUp. Initially, the team implemented PageUp Recruitment – and later added the full PageUp talent management suite including PageUp Onboarding, Learning, Performance, Analytics and Succession modules. “We extended out to the full PageUp talent management suite based on the satisfaction we experienced with PageUp Recruitment. We were definitely looking to incorporate a number of functions due to our disparate old systems, spreadsheets and databases. After looking at other products in the market, we decided that PageUp was the best solution for us,” said Johnston.

The Stanwell team now enjoys the powerful and seamlessly integrated functionality of PageUp Recruitment, Onboarding, Learning, Performance, Analytics and Succession modules. “The integration of all PageUp modules has made a real difference to the overall People and Culture function of the organisation,” said Johnston. Working from one system is a welcome change. When the team was working across multiple systems, decisions were made that were incompatible with other People and Culture functions. “We’re now able to be more collaborative and we consult each other prior to any decision-making. PageUp has given my team full visibility of each People and Culture process, which is something we were unable to do before,” he said.

Another great benefit for the team is the ROI they’re seeing post-implementation. Costly old systems have now been decommissioned and they have eliminated manual spreadsheets and databases. “With PageUp, all of those processes have been integrated,” said Johnston.
Hiring managers and recruiters are delighted with PageUp. They are now empowered to utilise analytics dashboards and full reporting functionality; and as a result, have noticed greater efficiencies in their daily workflows. “There was a lot of work upfront to define our capabilities and these formed a lot of the foundations of what we do in talent management,” he said.
Johnston feels that each of the PageUp modules has brought the entire Stanwell team together. Senior managers have the ability to self-serve and review candidate resumes – while leadership teams can look at their full bench strength and identify development plans for succession roles. “There is a pipeline of talent coming through, enabling us to place people in hard-to-fill roles,” he said.
Working with PageUp team is a two-pronged approach for Johnston and his team: it’s both proactive and reactive. “PageUp is always checking in with us and we are kept updated with regular newsletters and informed about new functionality,” says Johnston.

Partnership of success with Stanwell Corporation
With PageUp we definitely see better customer satisfaction.

Manager – People & Culture Services, Stanwell Corporation
When Peter Johnston, Manager – People and Culture Service at Stanwell Corporation and his team were looking to streamline and align all of its recruitment and HR processes, they had a myriad of business problems to solve. Their ideal solution was to find one provider to fix them all: and they found a successful partnership in PageUp. “The business problem that originally drove us to partner with PageUp was approximately 10 years ago, our recruitment system was basically a spreadsheet and a filing system. There were a lot of inefficiencies and no single source of data associated with the recruitment process we could come back to. We were looking around for a system that could consolidate all of those processes,” said Johnston.
Tangible and intangible benefits
With PageUp firmly implemented at the organisation, Johnston and his team are reaping both tangible and intangible benefits. “The tangible ones: we have been able to archive a number of old, existing systems that were hard to maintain, that had high maintenance costs, so that’s been great,” said Johnston.
The team have also eliminated uncontrolled, manual systems such as spreadsheets and databases which always had security concerns around them. “They were manual processes to secure that important HR information. With PageUp, all of those processes are integrated, it’s got a good security system that only lets people see what they’re meant to see,” he said.
From an intangible perspective, the team are noticing higher levels of customer satisfaction. “Our hiring managers are more involved in the process, they’re able to utilise better information through reporting, there are more efficiencies gained through workflows, alerts, scheduled reporting which just makes the process a lot easier to manage and maintain,” said Johnston.
A positive working relationship
Johnston and his team describe working with PageUp as two-pronged: both proactive and reactive. “The proactive is PageUp are continually checking in with us, how we are going, we have regular newsletters advising us of new functionality that’s coming out or interesting stories in the HR and People and Culture profession,” says Johnston.
There are high levels of support offered to the team, from their dedicated PageUp teams. “We also have check-ins with our Customer Success Manager, our Client Service Manager and even a customer support meeting where we meet other customers using PageUp to understand how they use it and determine if there are other ways we can use it. The proactive is really quite thorough,” he said.
The team hasn’t experienced many reactive situations: but have the reassurance that support will be available if the need ever arises. “Luckily through the proactive measures, we have those relationships with technical managers, client service managers, even global heads of customer service to feel comfortable to escalate any issues and know that they’re going to get resolved within appropriate timeframes,” said Johnston.
Secure talent management data with Stanwell Corporation
“Introducing the PageUp system, we have been able to archive a number of old, existing systems that were hard to maintain.”

Manager – People & Culture Services, Stanwell Corporation
In any organisation, having peace of mind over sensitive data is of utmost importance. Stanwell Corporation, a well-known energy provider to thousands of customers across Australia felt its existing Talent Management database security needed tighter measures and control. The team turned to PageUp to provide a robust security system and an end to older processes. “Introducing the PageUp system, we have been able to archive a number of old, existing systems that were hard to maintain, which also had high maintenance costs: so that’s been great. We’ve also been able to get rid of a lot of uncontrolled systems such as spreadsheets and databases, which always had security concerns over them, because they had no security, they were manual processes to secure important HR information,” says Peter Johnston, Manager – People and Culture Services. “With PageUp, all of those processes are integrated, it’s got a good security system which only lets people see what they’re meant to see,” he said.
Integrating for error-free employee records with Stanwell Corporation
“Our HR system and talent management system integration is a really important function that we have within PageUp.”
Peter Johnston,
Manager – People & Culture Services, Stanwell Corporation
When selecting a talent management system, it’s important for organisations to have a system that can fully integrate with its existing systems. When Stanwell Corporation chose PageUp to provide its end-to-end talent management, they found that integration to be seamless. “Our HR system and talent management system integration is a really important function that we have within PageUp. We integrate with our HR system – Chris21. That integration allows that single point of truth of data. We know at any moment of time that data is going to be consistent across both of our major HR systems which is really important,” says Peter Johnston, Manager – People and Culture Services.
Integrated systems that talk to each other
After a successful implementation, the team have noticed a greater alignment between the two systems. “The other thing it facilitates is once an employee is created within Chris21, our HR system, that immediately goes across to PageUp, which allows us to start the whole process, whether that be onboarding, inductions, learning and development plans, setting up growth conversations within the Performance system, it’s all there,” said Johnston.
Aligning compliance and certification
The energy industry involves heavy compliance and certification requirements: the team feel that PageUp system has also integrated well with their existing learning, safety and compliance systems. “This integration is definitely an important point. We even extended it beyond that, where we integrated our LMS, PageUp, with our SafeWork system – so what we see there is certifications and specific training that people do allows them further access within the SafeWork system. As soon as they reach that certification or training level, that’s passed across to the SafeWork system which allows them additional functionality within that system,” he said.
HR collaborating for business impact with Stanwell Corporation
“It allows us to work with teams, with groups of people and with individuals to make sure that they have the learning and succession plans in place to develop those capabilities and move on through the organisationorganization.”
Peter Johnston,
Manager – People & Culture Services, Stanwell Corporation
Stanwell Corporation is a well-known Australian based energy provider, with a large client-base spanning the country. The team were aware that their recruitment processes were misaligned: and knew that it needed to change. “Before we were working out of a number of systems and sometimes we were making decisions that weren’t compatible with other functions of HR,” says Peter Johnston, Manager – People and Culture Services. Now that the team has implemented PageUp, they’re noticing a much greater alignment between its People and Culture teams. “When we make those decisions, we have to consult together, use a lot of collaboration to determine if that’s the right decision for all the functions of People and Culture that use the PageUp system,” he says.
Greater collaboration between teams
The Stanwell team report overall satisfaction with the PageUp system. As a team, they work together to align on its overall deliverables and capabilities. “It really brings us all together as a team. With regard to capabilities, which forms the foundation for a lot of the work we do in the talent management system – there was a lot of initial upfront work to determine what our organisational capabilities are,” said Johnston. Working as a team helped them define what they wanted out of their end solution. “It was important that we defined them well because that affects the position profiles that are used for recruitment, it also affects performance. When we manage people’s performance that they’re meeting those specific capabilities that we’ve defined,” he said.
A clear path to future roles
Using PageUp has empowered the Stanwell team to ensure people are on the right path to success with the organisation. “It allows us to work with teams, with groups of people and with individuals to make sure that they have the learning and succession plans in place to develop those capabilities and move on through the organisation – so it’s really brought the team together,” he said.
Benefits of a unified talent management strategy with Stanwell Corporation
“We extended out from recruitment to the full talent management suite due to the satisfaction we had with the Recruitment module.”
Peter Johnston,
Manager – People & Culture Services, Stanwell Corporation
Stanwell Corporation is a well-known energy provider, supplying large commercial and industrial customers right across Australia. With such a diverse outreach, they were looking to streamline their people and culture processes within their organisation: and they turned to PageUp for its integrated talent management system. Peter Johnston, Manager – People & Culture Services and his team were looking for a unified solution that would align its people and processes. “We originally implemented the PageUp Recruitment module, which certainly made a huge difference in the issues we were experiencing as a business. It brought together both the hiring managers and recruiters into one system. That had all the information from the advertisements, candidate management, through to the offer and position profiles – all the relevant information that we needed was there for the hiring manager and the recruitment adviser to work with and process,” he said.
An end to disparate systems
The team were impressed by the efficiencies offered by PageUp Recruitment, which reinforced their decision to implement the full PageUp talent management suite. “We extended out from recruitment to the full talent management suite due to the satisfaction we had with the Recruitment module,” said Johnston. Embracing a full talent management suite meant an end to working with separate systems for Johnston and his team – who are already reaping the benefits of an integrated solution. “We were definitely looking to incorporate a number of functions, due to disparate old systems, spreadsheets, databases that were uncontrolled. So we looked at the products in the market and we decided that PageUp had the best solution to cover that whole talent management suite. On top of recruitment, we added PageUp Onboarding, Learning, Succession, Performance, 360 degree surveys and Analytics.
